Once a seven-year-old Indian girl was completing an exercise with prepositions, given by her mother as a part of exam revision. For each sentence there were two choices. The first sentence goes like this:
The cat is ________ the table. (in, under), the girl filled in the sentence as: The cat is under the table. The second sentence was: The plate is ________ the table. (on, at) The girl filled in the sentence as: The plate is on the table. Not noticing the choices, her father who is a teacher of English asked her why not the plate is under the table. The girl instantly replied if the plate is under the table the cat will eat what is in the plate.
